He could not free himself-nor did he want to.

He believed himself to be invincible. He was capable of astounding feats, able to outsmart all enemies with a single grin. He was one of Italia's revered warriors, rivaled only by the Wraith and the forces of Borgia. If a situation called for a quick escape, he could successfully free himself from enemy binds. But there was something he couldn't escape from, and it was the gravitational pull of inevitability. It was the symphonic nature of life's greatest treasure, which took the form of sunshine and violent rainstorms. It was the force that caused men to forfeit claims to the throne. The very same force that moved mountains, and inspired soldiers to reach unattainable heights.

He had been working alongside Italia's Grace as of late, helping his projects reach completion. Not too long ago, he had spent a great many hours watching Leonardo sleep. The artist had to recover from a bout of captivity, and chose to do so in the safe confinement of slumber. The pearl's closest guardian found the sight of his sleeping form beautiful, as his sweet innocence was encased in the wings of angels. However, knowing Leonardo was in pain was akin to having a stake driven through his heart. If given the chance, he gladly would've taken every bullet and blade to the heart-in the hopes of shielding the inventor from all harm. Unfortunately, Cesare's might left him helpless-and so he could only watch, close to Leonardo as he slept.

Fortunately, time was a gentle mother to men. It wasn't long before Leonardo awakened, much to the delight of the Assassin Order. After being released from Cesare's shackles, the artist settled into the sanctum of Assassins-and received the heartiest, warmest welcome any man could hope for. The man known only as La Volpe swore to protect Italia's Grace, come what may-and so time went on, elevating his vigil of a sleeping form. Choosing a newfound life over death, Leonardo quickly opened his eyes.

And thus, a new workshop was born.

Save for the long bouts of slumber, Leonardo showed no signs of damage. His baby blue eyes could've betrayed him, but Heaven's orbs did nothing of the sort. They were as clear as crystals, filled with honest emotion-and a sincere drive to live.

That drive, that passion, was one of the many things Volpe loved about him.

Oh sure, he wasn't the only one in pursuit of the artist's heart. And since Leonardo was intent on embracing life, Volpe could offer more dedication to another problem: his two rivals. Ezio himself was rock-hard competition, but then there was Cesare. The Borgia ringleader was hellbent on reclaiming his lost bauble, at all costs. He had every right to be furious with the Brotherhood, but-

There was no way in Hell he'd allow Cesare to reclaim Italia's shining pearl.

He could not free himself-nor did he want to. He might've been up to his ears in research, but did not care. A part of him wished he could spend the rest of his life admiring a certain jewel, as men admired other tributes to Heaven.

A part of him wished for something greater, as he was only mortal-and did not own an angel's restraint.

Rarely did he leave the sanctum's workshop, wishing to keep firm eyes over it-always. His wish to maintain Leonardo's workshop resulted in the addition of a new title: assistant. At that very moment, one of Italia's strongest men was drowning in painstakingly crafted research. Surrounded by sketchbooks, discarded paintings and sculptures, Volpe watched as an icon of beauty moved about, unable to sit still with discoveries on his shoulders. "Just think," he had said, for the fifteenth thousandth time.

"If what I have found is true, we could be on our way to discovering another civilization! Not only could we introduce ourselves to a new way of life and allies, but there could be answers to Italia's darkest nightmare. We could end this war we've been tied up in, for so long! New hopes and dreams-all of them could be lying in wait, just waiting for us to discover them!"

Having seen the entire world, all through a pearl's eyes, Volpe found himself perfectly content with everything inside of Leonardo's workshop-especially Leonardo himself. "Is it possible to find this new world of yours?" he asked, always soft and warm around the inventor. A smile graced his weathered features, transforming him into a much younger mortal. Leonardo's mere presence always made him younger. Happier and lighter than an angel's feather.

"It seems so far away. Is it possible for men to climb such tall mountains?"

The bright light of optimism graced Leonardo's eyes. "I believe so," he replied, clamping his hands onto Volpe's shoulders. His comfort level with the workshop's second keeper was high, as evidenced by Leonardo's wish to remain close. He instinctively became uncomfortable if Volpe wasn't near, just as a newborn cub became uncomfortable without its guardian. Whenever they were close, there was a bright light shining deep within the pearl's eyes-and it was a light the other male cherished, far more than the air he swept into his lungs. But much to Volpe's horror, the light of excitement simmered. Leonardo turned away from his guardian, wishing to depart from the workshop in the hopes of gaining fresh air. Suddenly, the weight of discovery had become too much to bear.

Or perhaps there were other issues on his mind. Other issues must've been-

"Perhaps I am being silly. Maybe we are only meant for this world, and nothing more."

In the blink of an eye, Volpe snatched him by the arm, whirled him around and pinned him to a wall. Holding an alarmed Leonardo by the hand, he fell into a blue world that knew no end. "I believe in it," he whispered, and savored the relief that erupted in the pearl's eyes.

"I believe. I believe there are many more worlds for us to see, and I believe we'll see them all-through your eyes."

Not another word was spoken. No mortal could speak, when pressed against the fierce touch of another's lips. And as they drifted through their embrace, one thing was made perfectly clear:

Volpe was determined to either turn the Brotherhood inside-out, snuff Cesare Borgia out himself, or both.

After all, he was caught in a wave he did not wish to escape from.
NOTE: I DID NOT CREATE THE FEATURED IMAGE. IT IS NOT MINE. I DO NOT CLAIM IT. IF I COULD BE THAT AWESOME AT DRAWING, I WOULD HAVE AN EVEN BIGGER, MORE BAD-BUTT GALLERY. BUT THIS WAS CREATED BY :iconayadragonsheart:.
